Ahmed Hesham 'Mido', the former Tottenham star, expressed sorrow after Egypt's 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations semifinal held in Morocco tonight.
Mido said in televised remarks: 'It is clear there are large gaps between Egypt's players and Africa's other teams due to players going abroad'.
Key remarks
He stressed that the Egyptian league is technically weak and far from competitive, failing to produce players capable of tests, shown by Senegal.
Additionally, he said there were errors costing the team, coming from players not playing in strong leagues.
Paths forward for Egypt football
He also argued that Egypt should reassess its league and develop it to produce talented players properly.
He added that hiring a foreign coach would not help Egypt, as Hassan has succeeded and knows the ins and outs of Egyptian football and its players.
Mido concluded that Egypt needs 30 to 40 players to go to Europe under a project to benefit national team.
Punchline: If football were a joke, Egypt's league would be the punchline. Punchline 2: Be ready, the next season might require a map to Europe.
