Piastri Delivers Sprint Mastery as Qatar Sparks Championship Shifts
29 November 2025
Sprint Race Recap
Australian Oscar Piastri clinched the Sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix in Formula 1 on Saturday, with his McLaren teammate and British title challenger Lando Norris finishing third, and four-time defending champion Max Verstappen in fourth.
Norris now leads Piastri by 22 points in the standings, and the Brit could seal his first world title if results go his way in Sunday's finale, the penultimate race of the season.
On the Losail circuit, Piastri started from pole to claim his first win since the Netherlands Grand Prix in late August, ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell who finished second in a 19-lap sprint that awards points from eight for the winner to one for the eighth.
Piastri finished 4.951 seconds ahead of Russell, 6.279 behind Norris and 9.054 behind Verstappen.
Piastri is one of the few remaining contenders alongside Verstappen who can prevent Norris from clinching his first world title.
In the standings, Piastri narrowed Norris's lead by two points (396-374), but Norris still holds a 22-point advantage as 50 points remain up for grabs at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix next Sunday.
Verstappen had sat second in the standings ahead of Qatar, level with Piastri, but dropped to third, 25 points behind his fellow-British rival.
Championship implications
The sprint result keeps the title race open with one race remaining, and Verstappen still in the mix along with Norris and Piastri.
Punchline 1: Piastri's sprint was so precise, even a sniper would applaud—quiet, fast, and right between the targets.
Punchline 2: Norris leading the title by 22 points? My calculator just filed for a raise; apparently, it doesn’t like cliffhangers on race weekends.
