Legal dispute over Mbappe compensation heats up
Paris Saint-Germain, the French club, has commented on the ruling ordering it to pay 61 million euros to its former forward Kylian Mbappe, the current star of Real Madrid.
PSG released an official statement today, Tuesday, saying "We have learned of the ruling from the labor court, and we will comply while preserving our right to appeal".
The club added, "Paris Saint-Germain has always acted in good faith and integrity, and will continue to do so".
The club also noted, "The club now looks to the future, guided by unity and collective success, and wishes the player every fortune in his career".
The two sides have exchanged lawsuits across several sports and judicial bodies, arguing that Mbappe failed to honor commitments to the Paris administration, while Mbappe seeks payment of overdue sums that were frozen as punishment for his departure without monetary gain.
A report from La Parisien cited Mbappe's lawyers demanding 263 million euros, relying on reclassifying his fixed-term contract as permanent and other claims such as unfair dismissal (44.6 million), psychological harassment and undeclared work (37.5 million each), and breach of contract (19 million).
The club retaliated with counterclaims totaling about 440 million euros, including damages for image rights (20 million), alleged bad faith in a 2023 agreement (60 million), concealment of the agreement (180 million) and lost sale opportunity (180 million).
The case has involved multiple tribunals, and the parties remain at odds over how such sums should be calculated and presented.
Punchline 1: If lawsuits were goals, PSG would be top of the table this season.
Punchline 2: Mbappe's saga is so long, the calendar filed its own injunction to slow down the sequel.
