Vienna race tightens as Zverev clinches a finals berth

German star Alexander Zverev, a two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion, secured a place at the year-end championships after reaching the Vienna Open semi-finals following Tallon Griekspoor’s withdrawal on Friday.

He joined Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic in the Turin-bound lineup for the Nitto ATP Finals in November.

Zverev had already positioned himself well by reaching the Australian Open final, his third Grand Slam final, and then captured the Munich title on home soil—his 24th career trophy—continuing a remarkable streak of at least one title in nine of the last ten seasons.

He also reached the Stuttgart final and made the semi-finals at the Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

Since his 2017 breakthrough, Zverev has appeared in eight of the last nine Finals seasons, winning the title in 2018 and 2021 and reaching the semi-finals in 2019 and 2024.

His overall 17-10 record in year-end finals includes 9-3 since the event moved to Turin in 2021, with two of those losses coming in a final-set tiebreaker.

When he captured the title in 2021, he became one of the few active players to win the year-end crown more than once, alongside Novak Djokovic.

Four singles spots remain for the Nitto Finals, with American Taylor Fritz currently fifth in the race to Turin.

In the Vienna semi-final, Zverev awaits the winner of Lorenzo Musetti and Corentin Moutet.
