Former England star Paul Merson dropped a bold claim on Thursday, stating the Premier League title could be decided within the next two weeks.

Merson argued that Arsenal are moving steadily toward the championship, the first time since 2004, as Liverpool and Manchester City have shown signs of a dip in form.

Arsenal have started the season brightly under Spanish manager Mikel Arteta, securing seven wins from nine league games and opening a four-point gap over their closest challengers.

The north London side appear more mature than in previous campaigns, having ended three successive runners-up finishes and benefited from a successful summer transfer window that strengthened several key positions.

While some pundits point to a less prolific goal return than some rivals, Arsenal’s real strength lies in their defensive solidity; they have conceded only three goals in 14 matches across all competitions, a figure that places them at the top of Europe for defensive organization and tactical discipline.

These numbers convinced Merson, a Gunners legend, to state with confidence that the Carabao Cup or league title could be heading north this season, provided the team maintains this level of performance.

Merson, speaking to Metro, cited an astonishing statistic: even if Arsenal had conceded a goal from every shot they faced this season in the Premier League, they would still sit on 13 or 14 points.

He drew a parallel with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea era, noting that Arsenal have sustained this level through nine matches, with three-quarters of the season still ahead.

“If Arsenal want to match that resilience, they must not concede more than four goals across the next nine games,” Merson added, calling it an extraordinary feat in modern football.

He recalled his earlier claim: “On September 19, I said if Arsenal left with four points from their two games against Manchester City and Newcastle, they would win the title, and I still believe that.”

“In reality, I think the title race could be decided within the next two weeks. Arsenal face Burnley and Sunderland before the international break, while Liverpool meet Aston Villa and Manchester City.” If Arsenal win the first two, Liverpool may struggle to keep pace this week, and a City–Liverpool draw could widen Arsenal’s lead.

“I also believe Arsenal could go deep in the Champions League this season, because once the group stage ends and knockout rounds begin, the league crown might already be wrapped up.”

In midweek, Arsenal beat Brighton 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the League Cup, where they face Crystal Palace. The league race remains fierce with City, Chelsea and Newcastle United still in contention, underscoring the tournament’s growing strength this season.

The win reinforced that Arteta has built a balanced side, capable of competing domestically and in Europe, with squad depth to rotate without harming results as the season approaches its critical stages.
