Atlético Madrid weighing a blockbuster with Lewandowski
The Spanish giants Atlético Madrid are reportedly lining up a blockbuster move to sign Robert Lewandowski from Barcelona, according to multiple press reports.
AS newspaper cited Polish outlets claiming Atlético are monitoring the possibility of bringing the Polish striker, Barca's top scorer in recent seasons.
Lewandowski's Barca future remains uncertain as his contract runs until June 30, 2026.
The report added that if he does not renew, Barcelona may entertain a serious offer from Atlético.
According to the Polish journalist Mateusz Święniewski, a move to Atlético would resemble the club's past arrivals of Luis Suárez or David Villa.
Barça's position and Lewandowski's fitness
Milan remains a possible alternative, but the Polish reporter argues Lewandowski would likely spend a single season at Atlético, a pathway he has followed before with Villa or Suárez, albeit with some negotiating hurdles.
History suggests such a swap could mirror the reign of Villa and Suárez with Atlético, who won La Liga titles under Diego Simeone.
Yet Barça and Lewandowski's relationship has grown tense as his muscular injury, sustained during an October international window, threatens weeks on the sidelines and a Clasico clash with Real Madrid on October 26.
Poland coach Jan Urban remarked that he does not understand Lewandowski's injury and noted there was an agreement that if pain arises, he should be subbed off immediately.
Urban also said the striker did not feature in the first friendly but played 90 minutes against Lithuania and even scored.
He added that Barcelona captain rested Lewandowski in the warm-up game with New Zealand but played Lithuania, starting the second half with a thigh band.
Urban stressed that he was aware the forward felt minor discomfort and that he and the medical team had agreed to pull him if needed, but he finished the match.
Lastly, the Polish coach urged against risking Lewandowski's health given a tight schedule.
Lewandowski’s Barca legacy and what lies ahead
Barça have not benefited much from Lewandowski this season, with four goals in nine games across all competitions and a period sidelined by fitness.
Lewandowski has played 156 matches for Barcelona since arriving in the summer of 2022 from Bayern Munich for 40 million euros.
He has scored 105 goals and provided 20 assists in those appearances, collecting 12 cautions and one red card.
With Barça, he has won La Liga twice (2023, 2025), the Spanish Super Cup in 2025, and Copa del Rey twice (2023, 2025). He also won the European Golden Shoe for 2022-2023 with 23 goals.
Before Barça, he notched 344 goals in 375 matches for Bayern Munich, 103 in 187 for Borussia Dortmund, 41 in 82 for Lech Poznań, and 21 in 32 for his old Znicz Pruszków.
With Bayern, he collected domestic, continental, and world honors and earned multiple individual prizes, including UEFA Men's Player of the Year 2020 and FIFA The Best 2020 and 2021.
Internationally, Lewandowski remains Poland's all-time top scorer with 87 goals in 161 appearances since his international debut in September 2008 under the late Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker.
Analysts say the move would hinge on Barca's willingness to negotiate a reasonable exit clause and Atlético's capacity to fund a deal that could stretch across a single season or more.
The saga comes as Clasico fixtures approach and both clubs weigh the risks and rewards of a star with a hefty price tag and a long injury history.
Fans debate whether Lewandowski would thrive in Madrid's pace and culture, or whether the move would become another chapter in a long saga of star players chasing trophies.
As the rumor mill spins, keep an eye on the clock—June 30, 2026, might feel like a deadline, but in football, deadlines often move to a louder deadline.
Punchline: If Lewandowski signs for Atlético, Madrid may need a second mortgage just to keep track of the goals.
Punchline 2: Barça might cheer a little—giving Lewandowski a fresh start while their budget gets a lighter tune.
