Ghana clinches 2026 World Cup berth
Ghana secured a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 win over Comoros on Sunday in Accra.
The Black Stars topped Group 9 of the African qualifiers, and this will be Ghana’s fifth World Cup, after 2006, 2010 (quarterfinals), 2014 and 2022.
Ghana joined four other African nations that have already booked tickets to the tournament in North America—Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt.
Mohammed Kudus scored the winner in the 47th minute, finishing a cross from Thomas Partey to ignite a night-long celebration.
Ghana would have qualified even with a defeat, as Madagascar faltered 4-1 in Mali at the same time.
A heated battle is unfolding in the other groups to fill the four remaining direct berths for Africa.
Across CAF’s qualifiers, 54 member associations were split into nine groups, with group winners advancing directly to the 2026 finals and the best four runners-up entering an intercontinental playoff.
Qualified teams include the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Iran, South Korea, New Zealand, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Jordan, Australia, Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana.
Punchline 1: Ghana just turned the World Cup dream into a calendar appointment.
Punchline 2: If football were a party, the Black Stars just RSVP’d “Yes, and brought Kudus.”
