Portuguese captain Bruno Fernandes, the driving force at Manchester United, publicly rejected recent whispers of a move to a Saudi club, reaffirming his loyalty to the Red Devils and his role in Ruben Amorim's project.

The denial ends speculation that a major Saudi side had already reached an agreement with the player, a narrative that had surfaced in the days prior.

Fernandes addressed the matter himself during a press conference with Portugal on Friday, sealing the debate for the time being.

During the Portugal vs. Ireland World Cup 2026 qualifiers held on Saturday, the United captain explained that he is content with his current situation and that his future remains in Manchester as long as the club wants him. He stressed that he is happy where he is, which is the opposite of chasing alternative destinations and a reminder that a big club deserves a big stage.

He added that playing for the national team feels like being at home: communicating in Portuguese, enjoying Portuguese food, and even the sunshine helping him feel at ease. Yet the midfielder-navigator says he loves the pressure at Manchester because it signals that the goals are significant.

Fernandes also highlighted his willingness to play in any position the coach asks for, noting that adaptability is part of his job and a responsibility he gladly bears for the team’s sake.

Since Ruben Amorim took charge of Manchester United, Fernandes has been deployed slightly deeper in midfield, aiding build-up from the back rather than staying behind the forwards as a pure No. 10. Amorim believes Fernandes possesses the vision to pull the strings with smart passes, becoming more effective when his feet are on the ball and involved in sequences.

Nevertheless, some observers feel this tactical shift has tempered his attacking threat, moving him a touch further from the goal. Still, he remains an indispensable part of the manager’s system and a core component of United’s structure.

United operate with a 3-4-3 formation, which places extra emphasis on midfield roles during rapid transitions from defence to attack, a domain Fernandes handles expertly thanks to his game-reading and leadership under pressure.

Refusing to follow Ronaldo’s path

While many stars chase lucrative moves to the Saudi league, Fernandes has been clear that he will not emulate Cristiano Ronaldo’s path after his second spell at United and move to Al Nassr. Reports last summer suggested substantial offers from clubs like Al Hilal and Al Nassr, but the Portuguese star chose to remain in Europe and compete at the highest level.

Valuation and future at United

English outlets have indicated United would not entertain a sale for less than £60 million (about $80 million), a firm signal that the club would only consider parting with their captain under a truly extraordinary bid, despite the handsome financial incentives from Saudi clubs.

This season, Fernandes has appeared in eight matches across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing no assists, with United exiting the League Cup early after a penalty defeat to Grimsby Town.
