Doha Takes Center Stage: Spain's 2027 Super Cup Repositions to Qatar
6 January 2026
Venue shift for 2027
Spanish reports indicate the 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be staged in Doha, Qatar, despite the federation agreeing with Saudi Arabia to extend hosting through at least 2030.
Version 2026 kicks off tomorrow in Saudi Arabia, with coverage via the Thmanyah app, the exclusive broadcaster of the Saudi Roshen League, and available worldwide.
Background and financial impact
AS newspaper notes that the move to Doha for 2027 stems from Riyadh hosting both the first esports event and the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, prompting the Spanish federation to select Qatar for that year.
The shift guarantees the continuation of a tournament that has grown rapidly and now delivers substantial financial returns for the federation and its clubs.
Rafael Lozán, president of the Spanish Football Federation, highlighted the financial leap: In 2018 in Morocco, the Super Cup generated about 1.17 million dollars, while current Saudi revenues exceed 58.5 million, with half going to participating clubs.
Lozano added that roughly 30.4 million dollars of these revenues go to clubs in national leagues, notably the first division clubs in Spanish football.
Under the current system, the Spanish Super Cup yields annual revenues of about 31.6 million dollars from sponsorship deals, 12.9 million from TV rights, 11.7 million from services, plus 3.5 million for travel and lodging.
Concluding note: If this pace continues, even the trophy will need a passport. And if your wallet could talk, it would probably say adios to a season ticket in no time.
