Emotional Breakup, Fresh Starts: Henderson’s Return to the Premier League Roads After Liverpool
Henderson reflects on leaving Liverpool and beginning a new chapter with Brentford.

A Difficult Departure and a New Chapter

Jordan Henderson, the England captain-turned-midfielder for Brentford, has framed his exit from Liverpool as an "emotional breakup," saying he endured difficult moments after deciding to move to the Saudi league. The age-35 veteran faced widespread criticism in 2023 when the long-time Liverpool skipper chased a fresh challenge with Al-Ettifaq.

Last summer, Henderson returned to the Premier League through Brentford, admitting he "suffered for a while" after ending a 12-year bond with Liverpool. He explained the decision in terms of personal and professional growth rather than a simple transfer, hinting that life away from the familiar can be a hard but necessary teacher.

Struggles, Criticism, and a New Perspective

In comments highlighted by ESPN, Henderson said, "It felt like a relationship had ended; it was very hard. Most players who leave a club they’ve been with long face the same feelings, whether they retire or move on. It’s a very tough period, but with time things change and life goes on." He also revealed he could not bring himself to watch Premier League matches after his departure and even avoided following Liverpool, joking that maybe he picked the perfect place while halfway around the world.

His return to Wembley-era English football did not shield him from backlash. The public jeers he received during two October 2023 matches at Wembley hurt his reputation in some circles and fed speculation about his omission from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

Henderson stressed that the Saudi move wasn’t the sole reason for missing Euro 2024; he had been involved in camps and, with hindsight, might have made different calls, though he argued the decision at the time was right for multiple reasons. He also noted that the experience outside England helped him develop as both player and person, even if it came with skepticism about his abilities.

He insisted he is not perfect and has made mistakes, but has always tried to do the right thing, help those around him, and turn criticism into motivation to become a better player and teammate. He credited ongoing self-doubt as a source of drive, saying it fuels him under every manager, including his current collaboration with Thomas Tuchel, who has faced criticism for his continued reliance on him in England selections.

Before a friendly with Wales, Henderson underscored the importance of the coaching staff and his teammates, saying, "Ask them if I’m just a die-hard fan inside the squad." He also spoke warmly about Jude Bellingham, praising him after his own omission from England’s squad following a shoulder surgery, arguing that media noise is often misrepresented and that Bellingham remains a world-class player and person.

Born in Sunderland in 1990, Henderson rose through his hometown club’s academy, making his first-team debut in 2008. He moved to Liverpool in 2011 for around £20 million, embarking on a career that would elevate him from a young midfielder to a pivotal club captain in the modern era. Despite a rocky start at Anfield, he grew into a leader after Jürgen Klopp’s arrival, guiding Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2019 and a first domestic title in 30 years the following season, among other trophies.

Internationally, Henderson represented England 84 times, featuring in World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2022, and contributing to a Euro 2020 final appearance. His Saudi chapter, brief Ajax interlude, and the 2025 return to English football with Brentford paint a portrait of resilience. He arrives at Brentford determined to restore his spark and continue contributing leadership and consistency at the highest level.
