Ferdinand's Bold Call: Pause European Leagues Through AFCON in Morocco

AFCON Timing Sparks Debate
Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand warned that European leagues risk a decline in quality as the Africa Cup of Nations takes center stage in Morocco this winter.
The AFCON tournament has renewed debate over the global calendar amid Africa’s marquee competition this winter.
He criticized the ongoing flow of major leagues, notably the Premier League, during AFCON, arguing it hurts competition with more than 40 African players absent from England's top flight.
Why Pause European Leagues?
In a video posted on X, Ferdinand said: 'African players have become pillars of Europe’s top clubs, and when they leave for national duties, competition dips. Why not schedule AFCON when leagues pause?'
He also wrote: 'Leagues should pause during AFCON, simply put... this would prevent the decline in competition in the absence of African players'.
And if that happens, the trophies might finally get a coffee break. Or I’ll start a betting pool on how many defenders nap at kickoff.
