FIFA weighs moving Egypt-Iran clash amid Seattle Pride controversy
Many are watching FIFA as it weighs a decision on the World Cup 2026 Group G showdown between Egypt and Iran. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
British tabloid The Sun reports that FIFA officials may relocate the match because Egypt and Iran object to using the game for LGBTQ Pride celebrations.
Seattle’s local organizing committee had scheduled a Pride Week event at Lumen Field on June 26, intended to coincide with the Pride celebration.
Although Egypt and Iran have laws restricting such expressions, Seattle organizers say the festivities will go ahead.
The Sun quotes a Sky Sports pundit suggesting FIFA could move Egypt-Iran to Vancouver, letting Belgium vs. New Zealand proceed in Seattle.
If Vancouver hosts the match at BC Place, the remaining Group G game would take place in Seattle.
Organizers stress that the talks are ongoing and that any decision remains official only after formal FIFA approval.
The World Cup 2026 hosts—USA, Canada, and Mexico—insist the tournament should unite fans, not stir politics. If the match moves again, at least the snack vendors win; popcorn diplomacy.
