Arsenal's 4-0 Champions League Win Over Atlético Madrid
Spanish coach Mikel Arteta was delighted as his new Swedish striker Victor Giokiris ended a seven‑match goal drought by scoring twice in Arsenal's 4-0 thrashing of Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, in the third matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Arsenal struck all four goals in 13 minutes, between the 57th and 70th minutes, with Brazilian forwards Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli also netting as the Gunners climbed to three wins from three group games. Giokiris, who had managed only three goals in 11 appearances for his new club before Tuesday, finally found the net twice at London's Emirates Stadium.
“I hope it's the start of a beautiful run for him,” Arteta said, noting the striker's high self‑demands and the things he does for the team.
Arsenal extended their winning run to six in all competitions and moved a step closer to Premier League leadership, opening a three‑point gap over Manchester City. Arteta added that Giokiris's smile was “wide today” and described the match as difficult, with Atlético sitting deeper after the early goal, before Arsenal exploited the spaces.
Giokiris spoke afterward, saying the side continues to improve and that they defended well and took their chances. “Both goals were great... it's a reward for the team and for me,” he said, adding that more goals will come as they keep taking matches one by one, even if that sounds boring in practice.
Atlético Madrid, coached by Diego Simeone, faced a second defeat of the campaign in Europe after an opening loss at Liverpool. Simeone called the game a learning experience and praised Arsenal's intensity and quality, while urging his side to focus on positives and improve in training.
Numerical notes from the match included Giokiris's two goals within three minutes, a feat that surpassed his scoring output in his previous nine Arsenal appearances, according to Opta and Squawka. Arsenal thus became the first team in Champions League history to record seven consecutive wins over Spanish clubs.
With Real Madrid leading La Liga and Atlético chasing, Simeone's side will need a rapid recovery ahead of the next European fixtures, especially as they host Club Brugge in December and travel to Inter in the later fixtures.
Sniper punchline: If droughts had a podium, Gio just claimed gold and a double espresso to boot.
