Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich Women’s head coach, spoke about his team’s readiness for the visit of Union Berlin tomorrow, Saturday, in the tenth round of the German Bundesliga.
He opened the press conference by detailing his selections for the clash, saying: “We will see who will play tomorrow; there’s always a question about when players should rest. When we rest them, people ask: why? When we don’t, they ask: when?”
We monitor the signals their bodies constantly, and if players are fit, have recovered properly, and are ready for the next match, we take that into account. We’ll wait and see; Rafael Guerrero has some complaints after the Leverkusen game, so we treated him with precaution as a safety measure.
Regarding his relationship with Guardiola, Kompany said: “Pep played a hugely important role in my career as a player and in my development as a coach. He’s now busy trying to reclaim the English top spot, but we stay in touch and our relationship is excellent.”
On records, he added: “I don’t chase records. I’d rather win a final than break a record. We win a lot, but the mindset matters most. If you win 16 games in a row, it gives you confidence even in tough times.”
About the Union Berlin encounter, he stated: “We must press the mental reset button and turn things around after the PSG game. We can reuse some things we showed against PSG, especially in the second half where we defended a lot. In the Cup against Köln we started strong, and we must bring that same intensity again.”
“The game won’t be only about pressing and possession, but also set-pieces, duels, second balls, and neutralizing their momentum. We drew there last season, so the players know what awaits them.”
On Union’s strength at home: “Their home form is very clear—compact, physically strong, with fast, experienced players. They defend well on crosses and press quickly, resembling Köln in several aspects, and they have forwards who consistently score. Their draw with us last season will give them extra motivation. It will be a thrilling match, akin to PSG, and we must prepare mentally well.”
Regarding the upcoming Cup tie versus Union: “I don’t think the result will matter much; each team will know the other better. Last year we beat Mainz 4-0 in the Cup, then lost in the league. Every game has its own story, and Union is a very tough opponent, so we’ll need the best possible performance—otherwise it won’t be enough. I have great respect for what they can deliver.”
Kompany spoke about the team’s mental resilience during a winning run: “After every game, we reset our count to zero. That’s what I’ve learned: focus always on the next match. I don’t feel we’ve achieved 16 straight wins; I focus on improving after each game, win or lose. I want to keep this consistency, so after the Paris Saint-Germain win, we now shift to Union and aim to win there as well.”
He finished by detailing the squad’s depth: “The squad feels stronger, especially with Lennart Karl showing his impact and Luis Diaz adapting quickly with high fitness levels, along with Harry Kane and Michael Olise keeping themselves ready. This helps us avoid excessive squad changes. It’s crucial players stay healthy, and with the return of Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito, they’ll be key this season. We have total confidence in every player in the squad, and this trust is the key to success.”
Humor break (sniper-style):
Punchline 1: Our defense is so tight, even the goalkeeper’s whistle needs a silencer—quiet nights, loud wins.
Punchline 2: If momentum were a weapon, we’d need a bigger shelf—16 wins later and the trophy keeps shouting, “Handle with care!”
