Lightning Strike to Marrakech: Nigeria Seals AFCON 2025 Semifinal Spot
10 January 2026
Nigeria marches into AFCON 2025 semifinals with a 2-0 win over Algeria
Nigeria, Africa's three-time champions, continued their strong run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, securing a deserved 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Marrakech quarterfinal on Saturday.
According to Opta, this marks Nigeria's 12th straight quarterfinal appearance in AFCON history since 1992, when the knockout stage began after expanding the field to 12 teams.
The Green Eagles have routinely cleared this hurdle in editions 1992, 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2019, and 2023.
The Nigerians had previously missed AFCON qualification in 2012, 2015 and 2017.
Osimhen and co. now face hosts Morocco in a tough semifinal on Wednesday.
The journey continues, and the trophy might need a bigger passport.
If Nigeria keep scoring, the trophy will file a visa.
Algeria's defense is so busy, it deserves its own striker.
