Mbappé seals European Golden Shoe in his first Madrid season
Mbappé, the French international and Real Madrid star, clinched the European Golden Shoe for the 2024-2025 season by scoring 31 goals in 34 La Liga games, becoming the third Madrid player to win the award.
Madrid's Golden Shoe lineage
The first Real Madrid player to win the prize was Hugo Sánchez with 38 goals in 1989-1990, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo who earned it three times with Madrid: 40 goals in 2010-11, 31 in 2013-14, and 48 in 2014-15.
A decade later, Mbappé’s moment
After a decade without the award, Real Madrid's success with Mbappé marks a special celebration in every sense.
Asked whether he dreamed of the prize, Mbappé told Marca that since childhood he had always dreamed of scoring goals; that is a universal dream for any kid playing football.
He added that if Real Madrid win La Liga this season, and he wins another Golden Shoe, he would be happier than he is now.
Regarding his favorite goal, he explained that he usually speaks of the last goal but chose the first one at the Bernabéu, a moment that began his journey on this pitch against Betis.
He stressed his interest in his shirt number, whether 9 or 10, noting he is a forward who can play in different positions and leaving the final description to others, as they know him best.
When asked about the difference between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, he said the two are completely different in history and culture—Madrid has a deeper legacy, while PSG is a strong club in its own right.
He also emphasized that Real Madrid is arguably the best club in the world, and he is proud to have experienced both teams’ cultures.
Can he surpass Ronaldo?
He replied that Ronaldo is a Madrid legend and he cannot easily compare himself to what he achieved, as his path is different; sharing memories with Ronaldo is a real honor.
He stated that his focus is on his own conduct and helping the team win all possible titles, not chasing a single personal goal.
On Arda Güler, Mbappé said the young player is talented and ready to help the team, not shocked by his rise and excited to play alongside him.
He described the season’s start as promising for a player his age and expressed hope that Güler maintains the level because he could be very important for the squad.
When asked about his goals for the season, he said he wants to fight for everything, not choosing one target, and that they must strive to win all competitions and give their best in every match.
Working under Alonso
Mbappé commented on playing under coach Xabi Alonso, explaining that every manager has his philosophy and style, and Alonso’s approach is distinct; they are gradually understanding what he wants and have improved since the season’s start and since the Club World Cup, though there is room for further improvement.
He concluded that they have not won anything yet but are on the right track and hope to win every trophy possible.
Reflecting on personal goals, Mbappé said he has not set a specific target; his aim is to seize every scoring opportunity to help the team, and the more goals he scores, the more trophies the team can win, with contribution to the squad as the priority.
Punchline 1: If Mbappé ever misses, the defense files a complaint—apparently the ball vanished into a black hole in the net. Punchline 2: In the theater of football, Mbappé is the sniper who never misses, and the trophy shelf already has his name on it.
