Nashat Akram fires back at critics as Iraq stun Bahrain in Arab Cup opener

Iraq’s veterans hail a bold Arab Cup start
Nasrat Akram, a former Iraqi international, lauded Iraq’s bold start in the Arab Cup, as the Lions of Mesopotamia beat Bahrain 2-1 in the group opener. He praised the fighting spirit and team cohesion that emerged despite questions about players from the domestic league.
Akram added that apart from Mohannad Ali the squad relies on locally based talents who showed commitment, discipline and a fighting mindset. He congratulated them on turning the tide and securing victory, and noted the coach’s trust in what the players can deliver.
He highlighted the Australian coach Graham Arnold’s assessment of the squad and confirmed the plan to manage physical load after minute 70, including cautious substitutions.
Akram also praised the 4-4-2 setup, with Mohannad Ali alongside Ayman Hussein, and the emphasis on closing space. He pointed out that Ali Jassim is a skilled creator who makes a difference with his touches.
He added that many critics have targeted Mustafa Saadoun, yet he produced a standout performance against Bahrain. The message, Akram said, is to forget the Bahrain result and focus on upcoming challenges. As a former national star and lifelong Iraq supporter, he hopes for a strong Arab Cup run.
And for a little light relief: sharp one liners in the spirit of good timing can be as valuable as a goal in added time.
Punchline 1: If defending were a work of art, Iraq painted a masterclass on Bahrain’s attack for all to see. Punchline 2: Our forwards run like arrows, quick and direct, and surprisingly polite about the goal net getting in their way.
