Ramos’s Monterrey era ends: could a European comeback be on the horizon?

Spanish former world champion Sergio Ramos confirmed that he will not renew his Monterrey contract in 2026, after joining the club in February.

The 39-year-old, who lifted the World Cup in 2010 and won the UEFA Champions League four times with Real Madrid, leaves after Monterrey's exit in the winter season's semi-finals of Liga MX.

Liga MX, like many Latin American leagues, runs two championships per year: an apertura and a clausura.

Ramos told Mexican television after the loss to Toluca, "Yes, this is my last game."

Last week, the press reported that Ramos decided not to extend his contract with Rayados, which ends at the end of the month.

He has not disclosed his next move, but reports suggest he hopes to return to a European club to compete in the 2026 World Cup with Spain.

The Spanish defender signed with Monterrey in February and appeared in 27 matches, scoring six goals, including four appearances at the Club World Cup in June and July, where the team were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Borussia Dortmund.
