Qualifying Triumph Seals Syria's AFC Asian Cup 2027 Berth
The Syria national team, known as the Qasioun Eagles, sealed their spot at the AFC Asian Cup 2027, hosted by Saudi Arabia. They defeated Myanmar 3-0 on Tuesday in the third round of the Asian qualifiers, moving to 12 points from four matches and topping Group 5.
In their previous clash, Syria had crushed Myanmar 5-1 in Ahsa last Thursday, thanks to veteran forward Omar Khribin’s hat-trick. Khribin was suspended for the Tuesday game, opening the door for others to shine.
Pablo Sabag stepped up, scoring twice in the 79th and 85th minutes, while Mohammad Al-Salhadi provided the assist for the third goal. This display underscored Syria's attacking depth and the ability to rely on multiple scorers at decisive moments.
Beyond the scorers, the match demonstrated the squad's balance and the coach's trust in a mix of experienced performers plying their trade in foreign leagues.
History and Look Ahead
Historically, Syria has appeared in eight AFC Asian Cup finals. The 2023 edition in Qatar marked a breakthrough by reaching the knockout stage before falling to Iran on penalties. Hosting the 2027 event in Saudi Arabia adds extra motivation for fans and players alike.
With qualification secured, Syria's next test comes against Pakistan on 18 November 2025. The group also includes Afghanistan, and the qualifiers conclude in March 2026. The coach now has an opportunity to experiment with new personnel while building a squad capable of challenging deep into Asia Cup.
Key players have thriving spells in overseas leagues, with Sabag's form and the presence of Mohammad Al-Salhadi strengthening the midfield and attack alongside other veterans and youngsters.
Punchlines: If Syria's depth were a sniper rifle, they'd be hitting targets from the bench. If depth were measured in punchlines, this squad would already have the trophy and the punchline ready.
