Two Big Tests Put Juventus Boss Todor's Future on the Line
Juventus’ Todor faces a make-or-break spell as European and domestic tests loom.

What’s at stake for Todor

An Italian press report today says the future of Juventus head coach Igor Todor will be decided over the next two matches. Todor’s position is under threat after a winless run in his last four Serie A games, including a 2-0 defeat to Como on Sunday. Como’s goals came from Mark Oliver Kempf in the 4th minute and Nico Baz in the 79th.

Juventus will face Real Madrid on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu in the UEFA Champions League group stage, followed by a Sunday visit to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the next two fixtures could be decisive for Todor’s Juventus tenure. A double defeat would greatly increase the odds of a managerial change. Potential successors floated include Roberto Mancini, Luciano Spalletti, Raffaele Palladino, and Tiago Motta, who was previously dismissed from the club in March.

Todor, 47, currently has a contract with Juventus through the summer of 2027.

Season start-wise, Juventus opened with a home win over Parma (2-0), edged Genoa 1-0 away, and then clinched a dramatic 4-3 Derby d’Italia victory over Inter. Since then, form has dipped: they allowed four goals in a 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage, followed by a 2-2 stalemate with Villarreal. They also drew 1-1 with Hellas Verona and Atalanta, and then were held 0-0 by Milan before a heavy defeat to Como. The club sits seventh in Serie A with 12 points after six rounds, three behind leaders Inter, ahead of their clash with Como in Round 7.

“I’m always worried about everything; this is the life of a coach,” Todor said after yesterday’s game. “We’ll talk about it in the dressing room.”

Rise and fall of form

Juventus began the campaign brightly with a Parma scalp, then a hard-fought win at Genoa, followed by a dramatic 4-3 victory over Inter in the Derby d’Italia. After that, results thinned, with a tough run in Europe: Dortmund’s return match produced a 4-4 thriller and Villarreal forced a 2-2 draw. In Serie A, Juve’s results fizzled with 1-1 ties at Verona and against Atalanta, a goalless draw with Milan, and a defeat to Como that toppled their early-season momentum. The slide left them seventh with 12 points after six rounds, three behind the pace-setters Inter.

A looming crisis

Juventus is set to face UEFA investigations again over alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP). The club’s latest statements note that an open investigation could bring a modest fine and potential sporting restrictions, such as limits on registering players for European competitions. Documents prepared for a shareholders’ meeting on November 7 show Juventus believes it has complied with the rules and that it will continue to aim for fiscal discipline in 2025 as well.

Under FFP rules, a club’s three-year deficit should not exceed 60 million euros, rising to 90 million for clubs with solid finances. Juventus posted a loss of 58.1 million euros in 2024-25, a significant improvement from 199.2 million the previous season. The club, owned by the Agnelli family through Exor, had previously been banned from European competition for 2023-24 due to past FFP breaches. Currently, Juventus sit fifth in Serie A with 12 points after six games, three behind Napoli and Roma, ahead of a match against Como in Round 7 scheduled for the following Sunday.
