When a Passport Becomes a Transfer Clause: Kolobali’s Al Ahly Ordeal

Revelations from a Difficult Al Ahly Spell
The Ivorian Sliamani Kolobali, a former Tottenham star, revealed his experience with Al Ahly of Egypt during the period he wore the Red Castle colors in 2017.
The 31-year-old joined Al Ahly from Scottish club Kilmarnock but left unexpectedly.
Kolobali was suspended after Al Ahly filed a complaint with FIFA over breach of contract.
In an interview with The Athletic, he said he faced many hurdles during his time with the club, including visa and work‑permit problems that made everyday life harder.
He recalled that Al Ahly kept his passport, which forced him to depart after a match outside Egypt when he finally retrieved it.
He also said he refused a request to return, noting that while his annual salary at the time was decent, the club environment was harsh.
Today Kolobali is with a third‑tier English side, continuing his career away from the glare of big leagues.
Punchline 1: If dealmaking in football came with a passport, Kolobali would own every country he ever visited— and still need a visa for the joke.
Punchline 2: When life hands you a red card, at least you can file it under travel delays; Kolobali filed his under international paperwork and kept the receipts.
