Zamalek Stands Firm: John Edward Remains in Charge Amid Turmoil
6 October 2025
Status update on John Edward
In an official statement, Zamalek's board led by Hussein Labib reiterated that there is no intention to end the tenure of sports director John Edward, despite the White Knights’ uneven league results. They warned against “rumor spreaders” and pledged legal action against those peddling false information.
The club affirmed its unwavering support for the football department and the playing squad, stressing that they are working to overcome obstacles and meet the season’s objectives, even as distractions grow and pressure mounts.
Financial strains and leadership questions
With a run of mixed results that saw Zamalek slip from the top of the Egyptian Premier League, draw with El Gouna, lose the Cairo showdown with Al Ahly, and then draw again with Ghazl El Mahalla, the club faces a sharp financial squeeze. Delays in salaries and the need for hard currency have pushed the club to secure a 25 million pound loan from vice president Hisham Nasser, leaving the dressing room volatile.
The club notes a contract clause that could trigger a hefty termination penalty for Ferreira if the club decides to cut ties, complicating decisions about leadership. In parallel, a planning committee was created during the renewal of contracts, including the appointment of a sports director, a move critics see as escaping direct accountability during a tough spell.
Before the Cairo derby with Al Ahly, the board publicly thanked players and staff for their patience, but offered no concrete timetable for resolving the backlog of dues. After defeat and mounting pressure, the leadership again leaned on a personal loan to cover part of the salaries, yet remains short of settling all obligations.
Punchline 1: If this season were a joke, Zamalek’s plan would be a setup and the punchline would still be off-stage. Punchline 2: In football as in comedy, timing matters—right now, Zamalek is still waiting for the kicker line to land.
