A Panenka, a Backing, and a Final Twist: Zalzouli Defends Diaz After AFCON 2025 Miss
20 January 2026
Diaz's Panenka and the Final Outcome
Abd El-Samad Zalzouli, Morocco's star, publicly backed his teammate Ibrahim Diaz after criticism over a decisive missed penalty in the 2025 AFCON final.
Diaz had a chance to seal the title by taking a stoppage-time spot-kick against Senegal, when the scoreline lay stubbornly at 0-0.
Instead, he tried a Panenka, catching everyone off guard, but goalkeeper Edouard Mendy read it and saved easily.
Moments later, Senegal converted the chance to win 1-0 and lift the trophy.
Zalzouli's Response and What It Means for Morocco
Marca quoted Zalzouli saying Diaz's decision to shoot Panenka deserved respect, not ridicule: "Diaz's choice was to go for it, and we should honor that".
When asked whether the criticism was exaggerated, Zalzouli replied, "I think it will make him stronger and a better player".
On the final itself, he added, "I'm fine, though things didn't go as we hoped; I'm focusing now on my club, Real Betis".
Asked about Senegal players leaving the pitch, he declined to discuss it.
Zalzouli remains optimistic that this moment will fuel his teammate's growth and inspire Morocco in future matches.
Punchline: If penalties were a menu, Diaz just ordered a Panenka—rarely available and not always well done.
Punchline 2: In football, a missed kick can still score you a bigger contract—depends on the press and where you shelf your pride.
