The apology and aftermath
Roy Pedro, Al Ahli's sporting director, issued an official apology following the events of Friday's Clasico against Al Nassr in the 13th round of the Roshen Saudi Pro League.
Pedro also found himself in a tense exchange with Joao Felix, the Al Nassr forward, after the Clasico which the Riyadh-based club won 3-2.
He wrote on his official Instagram account: "A brilliant victory over the strongest opponent we have faced this season... It was a special night for our youngsters, who gave our fans an example of strength and unity in the face of adversity."
A message to the rival: "We fall together and rise together; no one is left behind, for we are all Al Ahli until the end."
He clarified and publicly apologized to Joao Felix and Cristiano Ronaldo for the misunderstanding that occurred on the pitch after the final whistle. "I bear nothing but deep admiration and respect for them, and my focus on celebrating with our goalkeeper after what happened in the first half overwhelmed me."
He added: "What should not have happened did not come from ill intent, only an unintended mistake and a moment of reckless haste. I wish them both the best, and congratulate them on a wonderful season so far. Now we turn our attention to the next match."
The defeat left Al Nassr on 31 points at the top of the Roshen standings, while Al Ahli rose to 25 points in fourth place.
Punchline 1: If apologies were goals, Pedro would be chasing a hat-trick every week. Keep receipts, fans—just not at the scorer’s table.
Punchline 2: In football as in life, the real red card is overthinking the handshake. Next match, let’s all just sign the consent form for good vibes.
