Final in Tokyo: Alcaraz Extends Season Dominance
Spanish world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz clinched his eighth title of the season by defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the Japan Open final in Tokyo (500 points) on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old star had battled an ankle injury in Tokyo, but he still outplayed his rivals, including Fritz, who is ranked No. 5.
The US Open champion produced another stunning display of power and mobility to capture the title in his first appearance at this event.
Final streak and milestones
This was Alcaraz's ninth straight final and tenth of the season, bringing his total to eight titles and 24 career titles.
He became the first player to reach ten finals in a year since Rafael Nadal in 2017.
Alcaraz also avenged his Laver Cup loss to Fritz from two weeks earlier.
In the match, Alcaraz had squandered several break opportunities in the first set before breaking Fritz in the ninth game and taking the set, then pressed in the second to lead 4-1 after breaking serve. Fritz briefly answered, but Alcaraz closed it out in the next game.
Fritz had hoped to add a third title this season, after wins in Stuttgart and Eastbourne, and he had previously won the Japan Open in 2022.
Punchlines: Alcaraz isn't just collecting trophies; he's building a trophy apartment. And if rhythm is money, he just deposited a fortune in the season bank.
