Alonso Blazes FP1 in Singapore: Night Race Pace Sets the Benchmark
Alonso leads FP1 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit

FP1 Highlights and Key Takeaways

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin posted the fastest time in the opening practice for the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on Friday, the 18th round of 24 in the Formula 1 World Championship.

The 44-year-old, a two-time world champion, edged Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who had won the last two races in Italy and Azerbaijan.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) was among the top six, alongside Australian Oscar Piastri and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

Williams driver Alexander Albon, the Thai-born racer, faced brake problems and could not complete a lap.

Piastri will look to put Azerbaijan behind him after two crashes in qualifying and during Sunday’s race.

The Australian leads Norris by 24 points in the standings, with Verstappen 69 points further back in third.

McLaren have a chance to seal the constructors’ title for the second year running, needing at least 13 points on Sunday.

The second practice session will take place later in the day.

The Singapore Grand Prix is run at night to boost European viewing while offsetting time differences and reducing heat for drivers.

FIA issued a heat warning yesterday, with temperatures expected to exceed 31°C for Sunday’s race.
