Arsenal’s Cup Hopes on the Line as Mansfield Town Pose a Sneaky Threat
Arsenal face a tough FA Cup challenge at Mansfield’s One Call Stadium.

Arsenal’s Cup run under threat as Mansfield visit

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, warned that the club’s reputation could suffer if they exit the FA Cup to Mansfield Town, a League One side, in this weekend’s clash.

Arsenal’s Cup record includes exits in 2018 and 2022 to Nottingham Forest, who were then in the Championship, and the team has only advanced beyond the fourth round once since 2017.

The 2020 FA Cup remains the last trophy won by the London club, who are under pressure to end a six-year trophy drought.

The Gunners are contesting four fronts: a Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley on March 22, while remaining in the Premier League and the Champions League.

Mansfield Town had eliminated Burnley from the competition this season and also earned a notable away win at Sheffield United.

Arteta expressed concern about the impact a potential upset at the One Call Stadium could have on the rest of the season, noting that a surprise would affect their campaign moving forward.

Arteta, who saw Arsenal eliminated in the third round last season by Manchester United, said: “We’ve exited bitterly several times; it’s a horrible feeling. You feel like it damages your reputation, and we don’t want to go through that again.”

Arsenal’s recent path in the Cup involved beating Wigan Athletic in the fourth round and overcoming Portsmouth away, extending the club’s longest Cup run since lifting the trophy six years ago.

Arteta added: “Being the favourite in this competition at this moment, and on this ground, doesn’t guarantee a result. You must be well prepared.”

Reports have pointed to a poor playing surface at One Call Stadium, seen in Mansfield’s recent draw with Kenilworth’s team, underscoring the challenge of adapting to difficult conditions this weekend.

He noted: “This is part of the charm of the competition. You go there, you adapt, and you make the most of the circumstances.”

Mansfield Town are led by Nigel Clough, the son of Nottingham Forest legend Brian Clough, who twice lifted the European Cup with Forest and secured the club’s only league title in 1978.

When asked about knowing the Clough family history, Arteta said he plans to read more about them after tomorrow to understand the values they bring and what they might attempt this weekend.

Punchline 1: If Arsenal’s season were a sniper rifle, Arteta would be patient—every shot counts, especially when the target is a pesky Cup upset.

Punchline 2: In football as in comedy, timing is everything; let’s hope Arsenal’s timing is sharp, not just their front page headlines.
