Arsenal's Injury Storm: Arteta Defends the Club as 11 Players Withdraw from International Duty
3 April 2026
The Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has responded to accusations that the club manipulated withdrawals by players from international duty and allowed them to return to the Gunners early.
Last month, 228 players from the Premier League were called up for World Cup qualifiers and friendlies, but 23 withdrew, about half of them from Arsenal.
In a press conference, Arteta insisted on a clear medical rationale for every case and said the club maintains an excellent relationship with most national teams and with England's manager, Thomas Tuchel, too. "We have a very good relationship and communication with most national teams, and of course with (England's coach) Thomas Tuchel," he said. "We always support them. When it comes to clarifying the medical status of each player, we are always honest, and decisions were made with clarity."
He added that players are eager to represent their countries, noting, "When you are available to play for your national team, you should play." Arsenal is proud to have many players in their national squads and will support them as long as it is feasible.
"When the players are ready to compete for their national team, they should play," Arteta asserted, emphasizing pride in having numerous representatives across squads. "We support them fully, and when possible, we enable it."
Injuries mounting
After losing the EFL Cup final to Manchester City earlier this month, defender William Saliba said he would not join France due to an ankle issue. Teammate Gabriel Magalhães also withdrew from Brazil's squad with a knee problem. Striker Eberechi Eze (thigh), midfielder Martin Ødegaard (knee), and defender Jurriën Timber (hamstring) also missed the final, while Belgian forward Leandro Trossard was sidelined by a hip issue.
Following the international duty period, five more Arsenal players withdrew: English trio Declan Rice (minor knock), Bukayo Saka (minor knock), and Noni Madueke (knee injury against Uruguay), plus Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi (knee) and Ecuadorian Piero Hincapié (undisclosed). Arsenal, top of the Premier League, will face Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinal tomorrow, a match that will test their depth.
Arteta confirmed Eze will miss the match, while Odegaard and Timber could return pending assessments, and Madueke's injury may not be as serious as feared, though his availability remains uncertain. When asked about the number of players available from the 11 who pulled out, Arteta joked, "You'll see for yourselves. You can guess and judge after." "We are now in a position where we must field the strongest lineup to win every competition. We are two or three matches from the FA Cup title, and we know how important this tournament is for us."
Punchline 1: If injuries were a transfer window, Arsenal would be signing endless rain and selling sunshine at premium prices.
Punchline 2: And as the great sniper would say, when in doubt, bring humor to the press room—Arteta’s PR game might just be as sharp as his lineups.
