Arsenal’s Title Tilt Gets a Boost: Jesus Returns as they edge Brighton 2-1
27 December 2025
Match Recap
Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus says teammate Gabriel Magalhaes, returning from injury, boosted the defense when he came on in the Brighton match today.
Arsenal beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday at the Emirates, as part of the Premier League's round 18 to tighten their hold atop.
Arsenal's goals were scored by Martin Ødegaard and an own goal at 52 by Giorgino Rotter.
Diego Gomes scored for Brighton in the 64th.
Jesus spoke to Sky Sports after the match: "I'm extremely happy and excited because there are still many games left."
He added, "I feel great, after eleven months away I still need some energy, but I trust myself again when I have the ball, and I'm very pleased with my return."
Asked whether he thought a penalty should have been given, he said: "I don't personally understand why it wasn't awarded; I watched the ball, but the defender wasn't looking at it... in my view, it's a foul."
On the return of Gabriel from injury, he said: "As everyone saw, his entrance completely changed our back line; we were conceding chances, but as soon as he came on, the difference was clear, a true leader and tough defender. His return is huge for us."
And he added: "I'm happy with my strong return, I'm here in good health, I thank God for helping me in these moments, the comeback was scary."
Continued: "Everyone knows how tough the Premier League is, and the title race; City have won many cups, and now we are more experienced with a bigger squad."
And he concluded: "It's wonderful to be at the top and chase the Premier League; Arsenal belong here, and I hope we make it this year."
Win boosted Arsenal to 42 points and return to the top after City beat Nottingham Forest.
Brighton stay with 24 points in eleventh place.
What It Means
With Jesus back and Magalhaes providing steel at the back, Arsenal look more balanced as they push for the league crown. The mood in the dressing room is upbeat, but the title race remains as tight as a ticking clock on a winter day.
Two punchlines to keep things light: 1) If Arsenal win the league, I’ll finally admit I understood offside rules better than my coffee order. 2) The only thing sharper than Arsenal’s defense might be my wit after writing this article.
Jumping back to reality, the triumph keeps Arsenal on track for a strong campaign, while Brighton must regroup and build on the positives from a hard-fought away game.
Final thought: football is a game of inches, but today Arsenal took a big inch toward their ambitions.
