Asia Cup 2027 Takes Center Stage in Saudi Arabia
Ahmed Atif, the former Saudi football star, sparked controversy by saying the AFC Asian Cup 2027, hosted by Saudi Arabia, is more important than the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In an interview, Atif said Saudi Arabia will host Asia Cup 2027 and the goal should be to win the title regardless of the circumstances.
He added that the situation is tough; the Saudi team can qualify from the 2026 World Cup group stage, but this stage is more like qualifiers, and realistically they may not reach the Round of 16 or the Quarterfinals.
He also stated that if there were a real objective to reach those deeper rounds, the team would not look this way; there must be a clear strategy, which is currently lacking.
Since the 2024 Gulf Cup, he has urged preparing for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup; that tournament is the target and the continental competition that will restore the team's reputation by competing for titles and returning to the podium.
Saudi Arabia lies in Group 8 in the 2026 World Cup, alongside Spain, Uruguay, and Cape Verde.
Punchline 1: If Asia Cup is the mountain, Saudi’s climb looks camel-powered—slow, steady, and with excellent endurance. Punchline 2: World Cup 2026 might be a long coffee break; Asia Cup 2027 is the full meal, and yes, the menu is continental-sized.
