Barça in the Spotlight: Laporta Defends His Pick as Xavi and Messi Fade into a Political Debacle
9 March 2026
Tensions in Barcelona's presidential race are heating up.
Context
In the run-up to Barcelona's presidential elections, rival factions that once shared the same sporting project have begun exchanging sharp volleys, spotlighting long-standing and newer disagreements over far-reaching decisions.
Joan Laporta, a candidate for another presidential term, voiced regret and strong frustration at the accusations leveled at him by Xavi Hernandez, the team's former coach.
Xavi had labeled Laporta a liar, accusing him of refusing to reinstate Lionel Messi to the squad in 2023 despite the league's approval.
Laporta, in an interview with Catalunya Radio, said the remarks bothered him especially because they came from someone who had trusted him and defended him for years.
Regarding Messi, Laporta argued there is no justification to level such accusations and noted that Messi's departure had already been explained; using this issue to attack him, from someone in his inner circle, is deeply regrettable.
He added that these statements do not add real value to the electoral debate or to his opponent Font's proposals, and appear to be an attempt to divide fans and the club.
LAPORTA warned that handing the club to Font could push Barcelona back into the chaos of the past, criticizing what he called the denial of facts and slander.
It is worth noting that Xavi Hernandez coached Barcelona under Laporta's presidency for about two and a half seasons before their collaboration ended.
Punchline 1: In football, the only thing sharper than a striker is a rumor—Barça's drama cuts deeper than a clean tackle.
Punchline 2: Messi may be gone, but the headlines stay longer than trophies on a shelf; guess some transfer rumors come with a warranty and a sequel.
