Update
Joan Laporta has officially stepped down as Barcelona president, signaling a bid to enter the upcoming presidential election scheduled for March 15.
He began his tenure in March 2021 after winning about 54% of the votes; he resigns after nearly five years as dictated by the club’s statutes. His deputy, Rafael Yuste, will assume the presidency on an interim basis for roughly three and a half months.
The move follows Article 42 of the club’s statutes, with the resignation formalized at a routine board meeting and the call for elections officially announced.
At the meeting, per Barça’s official site, several directors left to join the electoral process alongside Laporta. Elena Fort, the vice president for institutional affairs, resigned, as did Rafael Iskudero, the vice president for social affairs.
The resignations also included Ferran Oliver, Josep Maria Albert, Xavier Barbani, Mikel Camps, Aureli Mas, Xavier Puig, and Joan Soler i Vire. With these changes, the board will operate under its new lineup until the end of the current term on June 30.
