Barcelona eye Julián Álvarez amid summer transfer talks
In a report from Spain, Barcelona is weighing a summer move for Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid as part of a broader plan under German coach Hans Flick.
Barcelona has completed only three signings this window, including a Spanish goalkeeper and two wingers, with Marcus Rashford joining on loan.
According to Sport, Álvarez is considered Barcelona’s top target for the 2026 window, with the president and the football staff closely watching his form, particularly after his two goals against Real Madrid last weekend.
Barcelona had previously shown interest in signing Álvarez in 2024, but he ended up at Atlético Madrid, while the club waited for a more favorable financial setup, especially as Lewandowski’s contract approaches its end and could free up around €26 million in wages.
The report adds that Álvarez is a Barça admirer, and his circle is keen on a move, while Atlético Madrid’s Diego Simeone would demand a substantial fee, with a release clause rumored at €500 million. Negotiations are expected to be complex given the backdrop of recent dealings between both clubs and Álvarez’s contract through 2030.
Separately, Barca is not ruling out a bid for Erling Haaland, particularly with an election year in play and Liporta’s strong ties with Haaland’s representatives potentially helping the process.
On the continental stage, Barcelona is gearing up to face Paris Saint‑Germain next, after a 2-1 win at St James’ Park in the first group game, with Marcus Rashford scoring both Barca goals and Anthony Gordon grabbing Newcastle’s reply. Paris Saint‑Germain had defeated Atalanta 4-0 at the Parc des Princes, with Marquinhos, Khvicha Kvartatskhia, Nuno Mendes, and Gonzalo Ramos on the scoresheet. PSG are the reigning Champions League winners after a 5-0 final triumph over Inter Milan.
Barcelona, meanwhile, were knocked out by Inter Milan in last season’s semi-finals, after a 3-3 aggregate that went to extra time and a 4-3 victory for Inter in Milan. Barca is chasing European glory this season, aiming to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time since 2015, under former coach Luis Enrique.
