Barça Edges Sociedad to Seize La Liga Advantage
Barcelona earned a precious 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday in the seventh round of the Spanish league, at the Luis Companys Olympic Stadium.
Barça's goals came from Jules Koundé in the 43rd minute and Robert Lewandowski in the 59th, with Álvaro Odriozola scoring Sociedad's lone goal in the 31st minute.
With this win Barça rise to 19 points atop La Liga, ahead of Real Madrid who were handed a heavy 5-2 derby defeat to Atletico Madrid the day before.
Sociedad stay on 5 points in 17th place.
The Catalan side began with a balanced lineup, with Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Rashford pulling the strings in midfield and Lewandowski leading the attack, while the visitors pressed high and looked to strike on the break.
From the early minutes, Rashford threatened from the right and, after a series of near-misses, Sociedad found a breakthrough when Odriozola converted a well-worked move in the 31st minute.
Barcelona hit back through a well-worked set-piece, as Koundé rose to meet a corner and head home in first-half stoppage time to level the score at 1-1.
In the second half, Lewandowski struck from close range after a skilful assist from Lamine Yamal, giving Barça the lead in the 59th minute and sparking a frantic finale.
Sociedad pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Barça’s defense and goalkeeper Chesney held firm as the clock wound down.
Pedri produced a standout display, playing 95 minutes, touching the ball 133 times and completing 105 of 114 passes (92% accuracy), underscoring his central role in Barça’s control of the midfield.
As the match wore on, Barça continued to threaten, with Lewandowski and Rashford both coming close to widening the margin before full time.
The referee’s whistle confirmed Barça’s 2-1 win, a result that kept their title ambitions very much alive while further complicating the La Liga race for Real Madrid and others.
Pedri was voted man of the match for his tireless influence, orchestrating Barça’s attacks and keeping the tempo high throughout the 90 minutes.
In a compact, information-packed game, Barcelona demonstrated that depth and precision can still trump raw pace, especially when the midfield is firing on all cylinders.
Punchline 1: If you think this game was intense, wait until the coffee kicks in—Barça just brewed a victory with extra espresso in the 59th minute.
Punchline 2: Sociedad left with more questions than answers, which is a nice way of saying their defense went sightseeing while Barça parked the bus at the 43rd and 59th minutes.
