Benzema to Al-Hilal: Ronaldo’s Grudge, Kalzada’s Bold Bet, and a Sign That Saudi Football Is Leveling Up
4 February 2026
Context of the Benzema Move
Steve Kalzada, Al-Hilal’s chief executive, says he does not know why Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr’s captain, is upset about Karim Benzema’s transfer, describing it as a perfect signing for the club.
A day or two earlier, Ronaldo took a firm stance and did not participate in Al-Nassr’s Riyadh match, protesting the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s decision to facilitate Benzema’s move from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal, a key investor in four Roshn Saudi Pro League clubs.
Ronaldo’s Reaction and Club Strategy
When asked about Ronaldo’s anger, Kalzada explained on El Larguero, the Cadena SER program, that the questions should go to Ronaldo himself. He said, we had a unique opportunity because we were searching for a forward, Benzema is a Ballon d’Or winner with exceptional talent, and he does not need to adapt to our league. All conditions were in our favor, and we are already seeing the commercial impact.
Kalzada added that although the signing was made to meet technical needs, the club has begun to invest in it as fully as possible.
The Blue Club’s CEO concluded that Benzema’s choice for Al-Hilal does not surprise him, given the team’s strength and popularity in Saudi Arabia.
Punchline 1: If Benzema keeps scoring, Ronaldo might start charging him rent in the locker room.
Punchline 2: In football transfers, suspense is free, but the drama is always priced in gold trophies.
