Bosnia and Herzegovina Stuns Italy to Clinch World Cup 2026 and Plans a Stadium Makeover
Bosnia’s win sparks a stadium overhaul and a fresh era for Bosnian football.

World Cup Dreams Secured After Penalties

The Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Association announced a surprising decision after securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, at Italy's expense.

Bosnia defeated Italy on penalties, 4-1, after a 1-1 draw at Bilino Polje, guaranteeing a World Cup berth in North America this summer.

This qualification marks Bosnia's first finals appearance since 2014.

Stadium Plans Take Center Stage

Vico Zeljković, the federation president, said the stadium that hosted the match will be demolished as part of the country’s commitment to move forward after this World Cup.

In remarks published by The Sun, he said: “We had problems before and did not maximize our financial gains, and we will not repeat that mistake.”

He added: “We have serious plans to reveal here. I will only disclose the construction of the national stadium. The current Zenica stadium will be demolished and a new 18,000-seat stadium will be built, meeting FIFA and UEFA standards—something that will endure for generations.”

Bilino Polje Stadium seats 15,600 spectators and has served since 1972.

Led by 40-year-old Edin Džeko, Bosnia secured a place in a group with Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland.

Punchline: If calendars ran on penalties, Bosnia just booked a World Cup flight with extra legroom.

Punchline 2: They demolish the old stadium to make way for the new one—home field advantage just got a glamorous upgrade.
