The Argentine star sparked controversy after suggesting he might be drawn to Real Madrid following Chelsea's exit from the Champions League last month, which prompted the club to take disciplinary measures. Fernandez later said he did not know if he would stay at Stamford Bridge next season, noting his contract runs to 2032.

In another interview, he clarified there were no negotiations with Real Madrid and reiterated his focus on Chelsea, while hinting he would assess his future after the World Cup.

The story grew when he claimed in a second interview that he would like to live in Spain; Madrid was likened to his Buenos Aires, a remark the Spanish press saw as a bid to attract the attention of the royal club.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosinior announced that Fernandez would miss the FA Cup quarterfinal at Port Vale and the league clash with Manchester City next week. He said the suspension is a collective decision to protect the club's culture, stressing that Fernandez is respected but crossed a line with his public comments.

The statements came after a difficult run of results, including four straight defeats from March 11 to 21, capped by an 8-2 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Fernandez, 25, arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 for a British record fee of 107 million pounds and has since played 161 times. Since Rosinior’s arrival in January, Chelsea has won 10 of 19 matches, with seven losses and two draws, sitting sixth in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the chase for a Champions League spot.
