Chelsea’s defensive masterclass: Cucurella the monster, as Chelsea topple Barcelona 3-0
28 November 2025
What happened in Stamford Bridge
Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea’s star, hailed teammate Mark Cucurella for his crucial role in the 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League, calling him a monster on the pitch.
Chelsea sent a powerful message with a stylish display under Enzo Maresca’s guidance, as Estevão and Willian Delap found the net, and a deflected own goal by a Barcelona defender sealed the third at Stamford Bridge.
And although Estevão impressed, the prize went to Mark Cucurella, who managed to neutralize Lamine Yamal—a feat few defenders have achieved since the teenager’s breakout.
Wayne Rooney described Cucurella’s performance as “the best left-back display I’ve seen in a long time,” and many pundits echoed the sentiment, while goalkeeper Robert Sanchez added that Cucurella “put Yamal in his pocket,” as Barca fans jeered the young talent.
The Spaniard is set to deliver again when Chelsea host league leaders Arsenal this Sunday.
Enzo Fernandez’s remarks
Fernandez told Metro: “Mark is a monster in every sense. Having a player like him every day is very special. He trains well and always wants to improve. It’s very important to have a defender of this quality in the team.”
He added about the team’s spirit: “We are happy with the result and showed a strong character. After Ronald Araujo’s sending-off, Barcelona came under more pressure, which gave us the spaces we were looking for and we scored twice at the right moments. Their defense was very high, and we knew there would be spaces behind them; we exploited them several times.”
Despite talk about Chelsea’s ability to compete in the Champions League, Fernandez tried to temper expectations: “We take it step by step, we don’t position ourselves as favorites, even though we represent a big club like Chelsea. We have a great team, and we are moving step by step.”
Yamal vs Cucurella
Yamal, meanwhile, struggled against Cucurella, who cancelled him out on the night. AS later reported that Yamal, who had shone in earlier fixtures, faded in the face of Cucurella’s pressure, losing the ball multiple times and managing just a single weak effort.
To avoid further strain, Barca’s coach substituted Yamal ten minutes from the end, drawing jeers from parts of the away section.
And this isn’t the first time Yamal has faced elite opposition; Nuno Mendes outplayed him against PSG, Álvaro Carrera controlled him in the Clasico, and Cucurella again came out on top in the Stamford Bridge duel.
Why Cucurella deserved the man of the match
The standout performance was not just the tidy defending but the way Cucurella limited Yamal’s influence, turning Barcelona’s threats into few meaningful chances.
For Chelsea, the win fed belief that their defense can carry them through tough nights, provided the rest of the side stays compact and clinical in attack.
Looking ahead, this result adds a new thread to the Chelsea narrative this season: resilience and smart defending can coexist with moments of attacking flair when the game opens up.
Punchline time: If defending were an art, Cucurella just nailed the frame and hung a painting of Yamal in the closet.
Second punchline: Chelsea’s back line is so sharp right now, even their off days are offside—subscription service for defense, coming soon.
