Coaching Cliffhanger: Morocco's Walid Regragui Faces Decision as Federation Looms
12 February 2026
Coaching fate on the brink
A pivotal meeting between Fouzi Lekjaa and Walid Regragui, with an official statement expected to end the debate.
Morocco's coach Walid Regragui is now closer than ever to leaving his post, with a decisive meeting said to take place in the coming hours.
Despite Morocco coming within reach of the Africa Cup title for the first time in 50 years, the Atlas Lions were defeated by Senegal in the final by a single goal.
That defeat opened speculation about Regragui's future, he is under contract with the Moroccan federation until the end of the 2026 World Cup, but the coach previously said he expected to be sacked if the continental title remains elusive.
French outlets reported that Regragui submitted his resignation, but the federation denied the report and did not confirm his continuation.
According to Le Matin, the head of the Moroccan federation Fouzi Lekjaa will hold a meeting with Regragui to settle his future amid the latest speculation.
It is expected the meeting will be held tonight or in the coming hours, after which the federation will issue an official communique.
Le Matin also stated that the bond between the federation and Regragui is fraying, as the coach signaled his desire to depart following the continental flop, so a split seems likely.
Meanwhile French outlets pointed out that Regragui is among candidates to take over Marseille following Italian Roberto De Zerbi.
Marseille keeps watching, while the Atlas Lions wait for an official word tonight.
Punchline 1: If decisions were goals, Regragui would already be top scorer tonight.
Punchline 2: And if suspense had a league, we would be champions of it.
