Conceição's Shield: When Al-Ittihad's King's Cup Nightmare Meets Management’s Final Stand
22 March 2026
Update on Al-Ittihad's season
The Portuguese coach Sérgio Conceição has publicly justified the team's decline to the club's leadership, citing troubling results in both the Roshen Saudi Pro League and the King’s Cup.
Al-Ittihad were eliminated from the King’s Cup in the semi-finals after a penalty shootout defeat to Al-Khald, and they currently sit sixth in the league, 25 points behind leaders Al-Nassr.
According to the Saudi newspaper Al-Yom, Conceição held a strategic meeting with Dominigos Suarez, the club’s chief executive, and Waramon Blanes, the sporting director, to discuss the reasons behind the downturn.
The coach reportedly attributed the downturn to injuries plaguing the squad and what some describe as mismanagement of the club’s transfer file during the winter window.
Conceição argued that the club did not adequately replace key departures, notably Karim Benzema and Ngolo Kante, who moved to Al-Hilal and Fenerbahçe respectively.
During the winter window, the team did sign two forwards, Yusuf Nesiri from Fenerbahçe and George Elinykhina from Monaco, but the additions were not enough to reverse the trend, according to the report.
The club’s administration has reportedly given Conceição a final deadline until the end of the current season to reassess the situation and determine whether the Portuguese coach will remain for the next season.
Humor break: If decisions were medals, this season would be a participation ribbon—nice to have, but not exactly gold. And if the coach were a starter pistol, the season would still be loading; cue the suspense and the bench music.
