Deal or Drama: Marotta Reveals Inter’s Talks with Al Hilal Over Cancelo

Behind the Talks: Inter's Negotiations with Al Hilal
Inter Milan's CEO Beppe Marotta revealed the behind-the-scenes talks with Al Hilal over signing their Portuguese right-back Joao Cancelo during this winter's transfer window, and the possible move of defenders Francesco Acerbi and Stefan De Vrij to the Saudi league.
Reports had pointed to Cancelo moving from Al Hilal to Inter on loan until the end of the season, with the Saudi club potentially adding one of Acerbi or De Vrij.
The Market Reality
Asked about the Cancelo deal, Marotta told DAZN: "We don't have a big need in this market, and opportunities are scarce."
However, with Dumfries sidelined by injury, Inter is assessing whether a player with similar traits and level could be brought in; the club is currently in exploratory mode.
Marotta also noted that Cancelo's contract is a heavy economic burden that no Italian club can shoulder, which makes the situation complex.
He concluded: If a swap with Al Hilal is on the table, the Saudis are seeking a defender, and once negotiations begin they will evaluate what to do to repair the right-back position damaged by Dumfries' absence.
Punchline 1: If this deal lands, Inter will have more right-back options than a GPS has routes—defense on speed dial.
Punchline 2: And if they finally fix the backline, Dumfries might get a vacation… or at least a spot on the bench with air conditioning.
