Real Madrid Sets Sights on a Core Defensive Target for the Future
Real Madrid is outlining a defensive rebuild for next summer, targeting a marquee returnee to lead the backline.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel: "Real Madrid views Nico Baz as a key piece of its future plans."
Nico Baz moved from Madrid to Como in summer 2024, with a buy-back option for Madrid set at €9 million. This return would give Real Madrid a flexible defensive plan.
Romano added: "The deal won't close in this winter window."
Madrid is weighing two routes to seal the deal: activate the buy-back in the summer or negotiate a different price with Como.
Romano stressed that everything is aligned; the club has reportedly agreed terms with the player.
He noted: "Tottenham tried to sign Baz last summer, but Madrid's stance was simple: the player's future is ours."
Madrid also considered Liverpool defender Ibrahim Konaté as a free option, but his form dipped, so the club shifted to other targets.
Punchline 1: If the backline were a joke, Baz is the punchline — finally something to smile about in defense.
Punchline 2: They say football is a game of inches; Madrid just turned a few inches into a fortress.
