Algeria Triumphs 2-0 in Jeddah Friendly
Algeria defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 in a friendly in Jeddah, as both nations tune up for upcoming commitments.
Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring in the 75th minute from a penalty, and Rafik Belghali added the second ten minutes later to seal the win for the Greens.
It was Saudi Arabia's first defeat since June, when they were beaten 2-0 by Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals.
Renard fielded a somewhat altered lineup for the Saudis, while Ivica Petkovic rotated his Algerian squad, keeping the match lively but disciplined.
Before kickoff, a tribute was paid to Salem Al-Dosri for reaching 100 international appearances, with the federation presenting him a commemorative jersey alongside the coach.
The first half was cautious with few clear chances, but Saudi Arabia gradually pressed while Algeria looked to hit on the break.
Saudi started with a few defensive and attacking changes, while Algeria’s coach named a starting XI that balanced resilience at the back with intent going forward.
After the break, Algeria grew more confident, punishing Saudi on the counter and taking control as the match opened up.
In the 72nd minute, Algeria were awarded a penalty and Mahrez converted, followed by Belghali's finish in the 85th minute to settle the result.
Saudi pushed for a response with late substitutions, but Algeria remained the more dangerous side and closed out the win.
The result puts Algeria in a strong position ahead of Africa Cup of Nations duties, while Saudi Arabia refocuses on forthcoming regional commitments.
Punchlines: 1) If defense had a sniper, Algeria’s back line would be its target practice. 2) The only thing sharper than Mahrez’s touch was the ref’s whistle—sometimes it whistles in a different language, apparently.
