Clash in Rabat Ends in 1-1 Draw Between AS FAR Rabat and Al Ahly
In Rabat's Prince Moulay Hassan stadium, AS FAR Rabat hosted Egypt's Al Ahly in the second round of Group B of the CAF Champions League, finishing 1-1.
The match, billed as the round's standout, delivered tense moments, including a disallowed goal in the second half that sparked a brief stoppage as security intervened.
Al Ahly players complained of objects thrown from the stands during the game.
AS FAR were awarded a penalty after a quick counter following a handball by Mali's Aliou Diang; the initial shot was saved by goalkeeper Shobir, but Mohsen Bourika followed up to score in the 38th minute.
In the second half, Al Ahly pressed for an equalizer and found it when substitute Mohamed Ali Ben Ramadan supplied a cross that Mahmoud Hassan "Trezeguet" headed home in the 68th minute.
The Danish coach of Al Ahly, Yes Thorup, acknowledged the tough conditions of playing in front of a passionate home crowd and said that a point was a reasonable result given the circumstances.
"When you sit back against a team with such support, things get very tricky," he said. "If we can't win in these tough circumstances, a point is not a bad outcome."
In the same group, Shabab Belouizdad and Young Africans had a stoppage due to bottles thrown at the visitors’ goalkeeper, raising questions about security measures.
Elsewhere in Group A, Renaissance Berkane fought back to beat Rivers United 2-1, with Younes El Kaabi leveling at 90+7 and Mounir Shouier securing the late winner at 90+8.
In Group C, Mouloudia Alger and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a goalless draw at the 5 July Stadium.
Punchlines: If suspense paid wages, this match would be cash-in-hand. And if football were a stand-up show, the crowd would demand a sequel—same jokes, different angles.
