Egypt Storms into AFCON 2025 Knockouts with a Seven-Point Group Run

Egypt clinches knockout qualification
The Egypt national team sealed its progression to the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by topping Group B, which included South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe, with seven points.
The Pharaohs finished the group stage with seven points for the fourth time in their history.
Yet they failed to win a third straight group match, continuing a trend of not posting a perfect group tally for the third edition in a row, having only three points in the previous tournament and six in the one before that.
The last time Egypt collected nine points in the group stage was 2019 in Cairo, when the Pharaohs completed the phase with nine points from wins over Uganda, Congo, and Zimbabwe.
They were eliminated in the Round of 16 that year after losing to South Africa.
Egypt had previously finished the group stage with seven points in 2006, 2008, and 2017, and has repeated that tally in the current edition.
Those editions saw the Pharaohs reach the final on each occasion, winning the title in 2006 and 2008, while finishing runners-up in 2017.
Punchline 1: If Group B were a supermarket, seven points would be the sale of the season—grab it before it’s gone.
Punchline 2: Egypt’s group-stage drama is so reliable, even the calendar asks for an encore.
