Osasuna fans adopted an openly hostile stance toward Real Madrid's duo during the showdown tonight at El Sadar, in La Liga matchday 25.
Real Madrid entered aiming to sustain their grip on La Liga's top spot, a position they grabbed last week from rival Barcelona after lifting their tally to 60 points, following a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, while Barca fell 2-1 to Girona.
Alvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid's coach, fielded a strong lineup to face Osasuna, who sit tenth in La Liga on 30 points.
The team relies on two attacking stars, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.
In defense, the seasoned duo Dani Carvajal on the right flank and David Alaba at the heart of the defense.
Real Madrid's starting XI was as follows:
Courtois, Carvajal, Alaba, Asensio, Carerás, Valverde, Güler, Tchouaméni, Camavinga, Vinícius Júnior, Mbappé.
Hostile conduct
The home supporters targeted the Real Madrid duo, defender Raúl Asensio and winger Vinícius Júnior.
Spectators in the stands booed every touch by the two players.
This comes amid the controversy surrounding Vinícius, and his direct clashes with several opposing fans at home and abroad.
Asensio also faces protests in some Spanish stadiums, linked to a nationality case involving three former teammates from the club's academy dating back to the summer of 2023, which took place at a seaside club on Gran Canaria.
The Spanish public prosecutor had previously sought a sentence of two and a half years for Asensio, while asking for harsher penalties up to four years and seven months for the other three players (names not disclosed) who left Real Madrid after the incident.
Punchline 1: If this match proves anything, it’s that football isn’t the only thing that travels on a passport—the drama does too.
Punchline 2: Don’t worry, fans—the only thing more offside than the jokes here is my sense of humor after this match.
