England's Euro 2028 Windfall: Tuchel Extends and Closes the United Door
12 February 2026
The German coach was among the candidates to lead the Red Devils after the 2026 World Cup.
The English Football Association announced Tuchel's contract extension until the end of Euro 2028, blocking Manchester United's approach.
The German coach took charge of the England national team in January 2025 with a deal through to the World Cup finals scheduled for this summer.
But the FA said in an official statement on Thursday that it was pleased to announce Tuchel's contract extension until 2028.
This extension means the German coach will continue to lead England in a European Championship hosted on home soil, with a two-year add-on to his contract.
Euro 2028 finals will be held in England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
Tuchel closes the door on Manchester United
Meanwhile the FA wants to secure coaching stability and end speculation about Tuchel's future before the World Cup.
The 52-year-old's name has been strongly linked with United, where Michael Carrick has been in charge until the end of the season.
This isn't the first time Tuchel has been connected to United; reports suggest he met Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France in 2024 when the club was weighing Erik ten Hag's departure.
But Tuchel said in November that coaching England had revived his motivation and energy, and he remained open to extending his spell, despite having initially signed a short 18-month contract.
"I know from many years in professional football what makes me happy and what brings out my best. I love working with players, staying close to the Premier League, and I appreciate the support and trust I receive," he said.
He added that he chose a short contract to simplify matters and focus on the World Cup, as he was not fully sure about the nature of the task or how he would feel while in charge.
Tuchel led England to eight wins from eight in the World Cup qualifiers, with the draw placing Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in the finals group.
The extension comes as Tuchel attends the Nations League draw for the 2026-27 season, and it adds to his coaching résumé that already includes Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich.
Punchline: If stability were a transfer market, Tuchel's contract has already been renewed by the bank.
Punchline 2: The only move this summer is Tuchel moving the Euro trophy one step closer to England—no drama, just drama-free defense of the timeline.
