Incident Sparks Controversy
Former Al-Hilal captain drives a dramatic incident today.
Salman Al-Faraj, the Neom captain and former Saudi national team skipper, sparked a major controversy in the Roshen Saudi League during Neom's match against Riyadh, that left fans buzzing afterwards.
Neom won 1-0 away at its hosts, in the 21st round of the season, in a tightly fought game.
In the 74th minute, French coach Christophe Galtier, Neom's manager, substituted Al-Faraj, bringing on Ahmed Abdu, to mixed reaction.
According to Thamaniya, the Saudi league broadcaster, this change angered Al-Faraj, who left the pitch entirely in the 85th minute in his private car, and sparked whispers.
The 36-year-old had missed the previous match against Al-Kholood, which ended 1-1, and Galtier only used him as a substitute in the final minutes that day.
Al-Faraj has featured in 10 matches for Neom this season since recovering from a long-standing injury, but remains without a goal or assist, and shows patience.
Punchline 1: He parked the controversy—literally. Punchline 2: The 85th minute won't forget him anytime soon.
