FIFA Spotlight: Gomes escalates dispute with Zamalek over unpaid wages

New FIFA Complaint by Jose Gomes Against Zamalek Over Unpaid Dues
Portuguese coach Jose Gomes, the former Zamalek boss now with Al-Fateh SC in Saudi Arabia, has filed a new formal complaint with FIFA over outstanding payments owed by Zamalek.
He states that payments due to him and his coaching staff remain unpaid, totaling about 120,000 USD, according to statements given to Kooora.
This development marks another chapter in the financial crisis that has plagued Zamalek, with arrears across players and staff in multiple sports and disciplines.
The move signals a sharp deterioration in the relationship between Gomes and Zamalek, which had appeared cordial at his departure.
The Beginning
Gomes left Zamalek in late 2024 to join Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia, in amicable terms and citing working conditions rather than a major dispute.
The relationship later deteriorated after talks of an amicable settlement, but total dues remained around 120,000 USD for Gomes and his staff.
The first complaint against Zamalek was filed in May 2025 for non-payment of agreed entitlements, and the new filing targets breaches of prior agreements, seeking roughly 60,000 USD for Gomes and a similar amount for his assistants.
Gomes’ departure in late 2024 was not surprising given the club’s financial instability and irregular salary payments.
The case echoes previous disputes involving former coaches such as Pachico and Groos, increasing pressure on the club’s governance and potentially triggering sanctions, including transfer restrictions.
The broader issue underscores the ongoing financial crisis at Zamalek, with sustained tensions turning positive relationships into international disputes. Gomes’ tenure lasted about ten months in 2024, during which he led the team to a Confederation Cup title and an African Super Cup with notable defensive concerns.
The agent, Kareem Abu Suleiman, explained that Gomes accepted the Al-Fateh offer due to internal problems at Zamalek, including delayed salaries and unmet contract demands. He noted that the working atmosphere had become uncertain, prompting the move.
Despite the tensions, the agent emphasized the cordial relationship Gomes had with players and staff during his time at the club, describing Portuguese coaches as skilled at handling players psychologically and noting Gomes’ closeness to his squad.
The FIFA process will determine next steps and could affect Zamalek’s ability to sign players or participate in competitions, further complicating the club’s financial strategy for the near future.
Overall, the case paints a picture of continued internal turmoil at Zamalek and the challenges of stabilizing finances while maintaining competitive performance.
