Vigo's Guidance and the Madrid–City Showdown
Luis Figo, the former Real Madrid star, offered guidance to Mbappé as the forward continues to rehabilitate a knee injury and shared his take on next week’s Real Madrid–Manchester City clash in the Champions League’s last-16 first leg.
Figo said, in remarks carried by Mundo Deportivo, that Arbeloa’s appointment to lead the team has not been easy. He is doing his best, aware that the club’s management at the season’s start is different from its midseason leadership, with little time to alter the approach.
Yet Real Madrid remains Real Madrid, regardless of form, whether it looks pretty or not. The club remains in the Champions League and still contests the title.
Injury assessments and the European stage
Mbappé’s knee injury requires careful evaluation of his condition, and whether he can take risks or not, and whether risks could worsen the problem. Naturally, every decision will be discussed with Real Madrid’s medical staff and the coach, as each case is unique.
Figo warned Mbappé that an early return could carry consequences, drawing on his own experiences on the pitch.
He noted that, in his case, there were times when he pushed himself and the results were not satisfactory, but the drive to be on the field for teammates often outweighed the risks, although such sacrifices eventually took a toll on his body.
He added that everything depends on how the player feels, and the final decision rests with the player, the coach, and the medical staff to determine whether the risk can be borne or whether worse outcomes may follow.
Regarding the Champions League, he observed that both teams are favorites to win the competition, a reminder that the European tournament operates with a different logic than domestic leagues. He cautioned that a team going through a rough domestic patch can still triumph in Europe, and Real Madrid has a long history of success in this tournament, playing with a style distinct from the Spanish league. He expected a tight, high-quality match.
When asked whether the result would have changed if Bernardo Silva wore Real Madrid’s colors instead of Manchester City’s, he declined to speculate but emphasized the midfielder’s importance. Logically, Silva in Madrid would be an extra boost, though that remains a hypothetical scenario since he plays for City. Still, Bernardo is an exceptional player with top-tier qualities.
In sum, the clash promises tension, strategy, and a reminder that football’s drama rarely takes a rest schedule—even in the days before kickoff.
Punchline 1: If knee injuries came with a transfer window, Mbappé would have signed a lifetime loan by now. Punchline 2: Madrid versus City? The only thing louder than the fans might be the medical team sighing at halftime.
